(April/May 2015 issue.) I suggest you buy/order a copy. You're in for a hell of a yarn.

Born into a privileged Hungarian Jewish family in 1921 he lived through both Fascist and Nazi regimes, experienced the brutality of the Siege of Budapest first-hand, then emigrated to Canada where he made his irreverent mark in the mid-century Toronto arts and culture scene - becoming best friends with Pierre Berton and chumming around with Marshall McLuhan, June Callwood and Peter Munk. But despite his out-sized talents and abundant potential, Feyer ended up dying in Hollywood at the age of 47.

Telling Feyer's story in such a high-profile venue is something of a personal victory for me. I've been reading the magazine for years and I'm told this marks the first time it's published a profile of a Canadian cartoonist, so that's good. But it's also because George and I go way back.

About 10 years ago, when I was working at the CBC Digital Archives, I was given a chance to tackle my dream job: to research, write, and produce an online feature about the history of Canadian comics and cartoonists. This involved weeks of combing through the CBC's TV and radio archives to find content that dealt with one of my favourite subjects, old comics.

At the time there was so little awareness of this part of our cultural history that I felt like I was a one-man guerrilla operation within the Mother Corps, labouring away passionately on a cause that few shared or understood. (One day, a CBC Archivist I was screening material next to asked what I was working on. When I said a feature about Canadian comics she visibly perked up, "Oh, that's great! I always loved John Candy!")

In the end, the project (The Comics in Canada: An Illustrated History) turned out great, and it's been nice in the decade since to see it and the footage I unearthed pop-up in unexpected places, and get referenced by the occasional historian. One of the highlights of the experience though was discovering this pint-sized, politically motivated shit-disturber who gleefully tore a strip off the stuffy arts and culture scene of 1950s Toronto.

George was a one-man art army armed with a felt-tip pen and a deeply dark Hungarian wit. His world view, shaped by his experiences with religion and politics during the war, was best described by fellow Hungarian George Jonas as "central European gallows humour" and it coloured everything he did. Berton estimated that only half of Feyer's cartoons ever saw print, and even the ones that did were often toned down for mass consumption.

But even then his talent could not be contained by one medium. His knack for live-drawing (borne of necessity during his WW2 black market passport business) quickly gained him a gig as a personality on CBC Television, where he plied his trade mostly on the saccharine children's shows of the 1950s (see above). But he occasionally had the chance to use his skills for a more mature audience, like this 1964 clip from the current affairs show The Observer.

I quickly became entranced by this dervish, and began reading whatever I could get my hands on. Eventually I met his son, Anthony Feyer, at the 2006 Doug Wright Awards where George was inducted into the Giants of the North Hall of Fame. After chatting with Tony and learning more about his Dad's life, I knew right then that I had to tell his story.

Then, in 2013 I got an email from the editor of Canada's History Magazine asking if I had any ideas for a cartoonist profile. I pitched three, but I knew as I was preparing them that Feyer was the only choice. Next to him the others didn't stand a chance. His talent was soaring and years ahead of its time, and his sad, solitary end -- he was found dead after weeks in his apartment, owned by the ex-wife of James Mason -- was a heartbreaking punctuation to a life lived large.

His death crushed his family and friends and apparently cast a long shadow. Berton's 1975 book, Hollywood's Canada, The Americanization of Our National Image, is dedicated to his good friend, who died seven years before.

And I feel like that shadow extends into the 21st century. His intelligent, jaded outlook and his ability to respond to current affairs with quickly-drawn comics seems a perfect fit for today's web comics landscape.

Anyways, I hope this background helps explain why I feel so inordinately proud of this piece. George was a singular talent whose story needed to be told. I'm honoured that he chose me to tell it.
At the time I was working at CBC Toronto and doing freelance writing on the side, the latter of which served to introduce me to Seth. I had been reading his work for years but had only been introduced to him a few years before after I wrote an article about the historic/legendary weekly lunches that took place in Toronto between him, Chester Brown and Joe Matt (friends, and fellow cartoonists).

Anyways, during the 2006 Toronto Comics Arts Festival the very enthusiastic director Luc Chamberland asked me to answer some questions on camera for a film he was making about Seth. I agreed. Forty-five minutes, and many retakes later, I shook his hand and asked when I might expect to see the final product. "The ways things are going at the NFB these days it could take a few years," he said. Aside from seeing him briefly the following year when he filmed Seth's on-stage appearance with Chet and Joe at The Doug Wright Awards, that was the last I saw of him - or heard anything about the film.

Then out of nowhere, this summer, news of the film's release bubbled up online. Not only was Seth's Dominion (great name) finally being released but its world premiere was happening at the Ottawa International Animation Festival, which was taking place in my hometown. Serendipity never felt so good.

So, last Friday I'm standing in the line-up outside the Bytowne Cinema when I notice a man dressed in a snappy hat and vest staring at me. No, it wasn't Seth; It was Luc. We quickly caught up, he thanked me for my interview and informed me that I made the final cut. Great, I thought. That means I have to watch a much younger version of myself on film (ugh) and I won't be able to pitch a review of the film. So I figured I'd just chime in on the old blog.

Before I do so I should say, for those who don't know, Seth and I have worked on a few projects together (The Collected Doug Wright being one of them) and co-founded the Doug Wright Awards together. That being said, knowing Seth and his work probably made me a tougher critic of the film - and I certainly had my concerns going in.

Two things concerned me. One was the length of time it took to complete the film. I know I'm significantly different in 2014 than I was in 2006, and so was Seth. The other bigger concern was the use of animation. The road to adapting comics to cartoons is often a bumpy one, simply because people fail to understand that the two are different mediums that require a different skill set to effectively pull off. So when I heard that Luc had adapted some of Seth's comics into animated form I admit that I was nervous since in my experience the adaptation process more often than not loses something essential to the original comics.

Luckily, any trepidations were quickly dismissed within the first five minutes of Seth's Dominion. The director wisely sets the tone for the film during the opening credits by having a clip of Seth expressing his amusement at the NFB's request to phrase his answers to questions "in declarative statements" only. This gets a laugh in early, but it also allows a bit of Seth's natural gregariousness to shine through; which serves as a counter-balance to the mostly serious subject matter that makes up most of the rest of the film. It also acknowledges the inherent but unspoken lie that rests at the heart of all documentaries; the notion that they are telling an objective truth, rather than engaging in story-telling.
The rest of the film does a remarkably artful and efficient job of conveying Seth's life and career in a way that felt fulsome and fresh even to someone like me, who brings a robust understanding of the subject to the table. Chamberland leaves few stones unturned, exploring Seth's published comics work, his stamp diaries, his Dominion cardboard building project, his puppetry, his home renovations, and even his design work on his wife's barber shop. The doc is divided almost evenly between on camera interviews with Seth
and people who know him (Chris Oliveros, Chester Brown, Joe Matt, *me*, his
wife Tania) and animated versions of his stamp diary strips.

The
interviews are insightful, especially Chester's, and it was a thrill (to me anyway) to see Joe Matt reemerge from the aether like some sort of grinning Ghost of Comics Past to comment of Seth's nature. (Which he does a very good and characteristically honest job of.) It would have been nice to see a few more interviews with the likes of Beguiling owner Peter Birkemoe or Jeet Heer, or any one of Seth's other cartoonist pals -- Chris Ware, Adrian Tomine, Dan Clowes, Chip Kidd, Ivan Brunetti -- but that's a minor quibble, especially given the constraints of time and budget.

Then there's the animated segments, which I admit I was prepared to hate. Yet, when that little animated Seth pops up early on to explain the unique nature of the comics language I was immediately hooked. It turns out that Seth makes a perfect cartoon character. He certainly has the uniform for it. I mean, look at this:

His ever-present fedora and suit make perfect sense in animated form; even his voice -- with that trademark nasal twang -- is an ideal fit for a cartoon character. At one point it crossed my mind that he might have missed his true calling.

The animated segments are done digitally (or "tradigitally", a new term i learned at the festival), which typically would leave me cold. But whoever animated these segments had a keen understanding of the morose, human engine that drives Seth's best work. The result are some of the most engaging cartoons I've seen in decades - and a true heir to the NFB's legacy of top-rate animated films.
While it's too early to gauge the general public's reaction to Seth's Dominion, based on the reception it got at the premiere I think it will appeal to Seth fans and non-fans alike. As a whole, it does a masterful job of gathering all of Seth's varied artistic outputs and presenting them together with a through line that taps into the heart of his artistic impulses. Fresh yet familiar, it's bound to please. And judging on the fact that it won the OIAF's Grand Prize for Best Feature, I'm sure you'll be able to judge for yourself once it screens in a theatre near you.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">The other night I had the pleasure of watching the world premiere of Seth's Dominion,
a long-awaited documentary from the NFB about the life and career of
Guelph-cartoonist (and my pal) Seth. The doc is great -- no superlatives
will really do it justice -- and I plan on reviewing it here soon.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Director
Luc Chamberlan has done a very good job of capturing the full breadth
of Seth's artistic output, which includes comics, model buildings,
puppets and his famous rubber-stamp diary. Based on a joke he told a
fellow cartoonist, the rubber-stamp diary is exactly what it sound like:
he had a set of rubber stamps made with some basic comic panels on them
(him walking, smoking, working, exterior shots of his house). To spark
his creativity he then stamps a page ion one of his notebooks with a
random assortment of comic panels, then he fills in the word balloons to
make a strip out of it. They're great.

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">The
idea made me think of Canadian-Hungarian cartoonist George Feyer, who
tragically killed himself in 1967. George famously had a stamp made up
with the words "Horse Shit" on them in a Gothic script. Whenever he
disagreed with somebody who wrote to him out came the stamp. It was a
reply that was simple, brusque and outrageous (given the era).

<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">I recently wrote a profile of Feyer for Canada's History Magazine and during my research was
lucky enough to come across a 1966 letter that he had applied his
singular stamp to. I give it to you here as evidence of the power of
Feyer's fiendishly iconoclastic nature. What a guy. <span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">

This might be the strangest, odd-ball find I've seen in a while - and I've seen my share. While poring through a collection of old Maclean's magazines that he recently acquired, cartoonist Seth came across this gag cartoon from the May 15, 1949 issue that looks to be done by none other than Jack Chick! Yes, that Jack Chick - now better known as Jack T. Chick, he of the notorious fire-and-brimstone Baptist comics.

Check it out.

That's definitely his name in the lower left-hand corner:

Sure, it's a pretty pedestrian gag , but if it's actually from the pen of Chick it casts some overdue light on his mysterious career: primarily that he was a published (secular) cartoonist 64 years ago. From what we know, Chick drew as a child and underwent his pivotal religious conversion after the Second World War thanks to his new bride, a Canadian-immigrant he met in Pasadena, California named Lola Lynn Priddle. Apparently she was very religious and during a visit to her family's home introduced him to a popular evangelical radio show from Charles E. Fuller that was responsible for flipping the God switch in his head.

The couple settled in El Monte, California where he got a job as a technical illustrator for an aerospace company. According to Wikipedia, he was too shy to evangelize to people directly so turned to comics in the 1950s after learning that the Communist Party of China had used comic tracts to gain influence among Chinese workers and labourers. He self-published his first tract in 1960, and established Chick Publications in 1970. The story since then involves a steady, relentless stream of freaky, reactionary (yet highly influential) tracts, comics and assorted material. But I've never read anything about his comics career prior to his religious conversion -- i guess until now.

Chick married Priddle in 1948: a year before this cartoon was published in Maclean's, one of two marquee venues for cartoonists of the day. Is it possible that Chick, then an illustrator/nascent cartoonist, was pointed in the direction of Maclean's by his new Canadian wife? Who knows. If anybody else has insight into this cartoon, and this period of Chick's comics career, I'd love to hear about it.
After blogging the other day about the letter-themed Tumblr by Julie Doucet and Simon Bosse, I came across a Tumblr by Geneviève Castrée dedicated to her love of stamps. A cartoonist and philately nerd: does it get any better?

The site is called Perdus dans la poste (Lost in the mail) and is a joy to scroll through. I am shocked how emotional I got looking at some of these stamps.
As Castrée writes the site was inspired by the slow decline of the US Postal Service (where she lives). As she puts it:

"When was the last time you wrote a letter? The last time you licked a stamp?

Some will say that we need to modernize, that we don’t need what is
physical, what is paper anymore.

Well, honestly, if that is how you
feel I find you to be heartless. A properly functioning national mail
delivery service is what I call CIVILIZATION."

I can go with that. More below.
Most of them are from fans or other cartoonists, and harken back to the early 90s hey-day of Doucet's Dirty Plotte fame, which she has gone to great lengths to distance herself from in the 20 odd years since.

There's a ton of fun stuff here, including postcards to Simon from Marc Bell (below), and one to Julie Doucet from cartoonist Jean-Christophe Menu from the early 90s, when he was about to establish the influential comics house L'Association.

Then there's one from controversy-magnet Mike Diana c. 1995, which was written on the back of a form letter from Jack Daniels. Gotta check that one out. Here's the front:
Brad Mackayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16598315230183851740noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1293692046154595853.post-58004167637868846102013-01-11T08:30:00.000-05:002013-01-11T12:27:54.299-05:00Exploring the 'fourth sex' The latest issue of University Affairs includes a feature I wrote on Dr. Tony Bogaert, a University of Brock sexologist who has become something of a hero for the fastly emerging asexual pride movement in North America and beyond. (There he is below, standing in front of the asexual pride colours.)

I have to admit I knew nothing about asexuals or the asexuality pride movement when I was asked by UA to write the piece. In fact, I scoffed a bit internally at the very notion of asexuals as a new "fourth sex" in addition to heterosexuals, homosexuals and bisexuals.

But after reading Bogaert's smart, snappy book on the subject, Understanding Asexuality, I became increasingly convinced. As Bogaert states, the idea of people who are completely uninterested in sexual activity poses a threat to our hyper-sexualized culture. Even Dan Savage, the gay journalist and political advocate, has been slow to accept asexuals as a legitimate sex, laughing of the asexual pride movement that has sprung up over the past half-decade.

But as Bogaert points out, for two-thirds of
natural history asexual reproduction was actually the
norm: sexual reproduction is only believed to have begun about 1.2 billion years ago (among some very unsexy organisms called eukaryotes). Today, many asexuals are standing up, in public and on popular asexual websites like the Asexuality Visibility and Education Network.

Last year Tim Gunn, former host of Project Runway, came out as asexual in a move that instantly forced the topic of asexuality -- and Bogaert's body of research -- into the spotlight. As you'll see if you read my piece, the issue is a surprisingly sensitive one that poses a host of social and political ramifications.

Go check it out, and let me know what you think.
If D&Q's head honcho Chris Oliveros is to be believed, this latest volume of "Canada's Peanuts" is sure to fly off the shelf in Tokyo where they recently sold out of their Nipper stock at a comics convention in a couple of hours.

But the real reason I mention it here is because I contributed an introduction to the new book which offers up some historical perspective and perhaps insight into Wright's creative process at the time.
As well, D&Q fills us in on news from the recent grand opening of Doug Wright Park in Burlington, Ontario. Phyllis Wright and her three boys were on hand, as was Seth. Photos over on the company blog.

So, last summer someone made a 3D movie about the Smurfs, those little blue guys (and girl) -- and it made a lot of green. Like more than $560 million worth. That’s more than double Green Lantern and about $200 million more than Captain America. Not too shabby for a moribund Belgian comic. I spotted the DVD in a store the other day and it got me thinking about the surprising similarities between the enduring (and annoying) blue imps and the Brownies, a popular turn-of-the-century pop culture phenomenon by writer/cartoonist Palmer Cox.

The Canadian-born Cox created the characters after hearing stories of Scottish/Irish "brownies", mischievous little elvin creatures who would help humans at night. They first appeared in book form in 1883. A secretive society of all-male sprite-like creatures who pulled pranks and occasionally helped out humans, they were easily identifiable thanks to their one-note personalities. Some favourites: Chauncey Quoter (a poet), Major Telloff (an army commander) and Cholly Boutonnière (a top-hatted dandy). Heck, they even sported little peaked caps.

I know, right? I can’t be the only one to connect the dots on this can I? The fact that Cox died in 1924 and Pierre Culliford, the creator of the Smurfs, was born four years later lends at least some credence to the possible connection. Cox's books enjoyed multiple reprints for decades after his death, and were translated into many langugaes, so it's possible that a young Culliford would have been exposed to them.

Keep in mind, though largely forgotten today the Brownies were wildly popular, with their adventures being translated in multiple languages and many products being sold with their image attached. Ever hear of Kodak’s Brownie camera? Yep -- an early example of sponsorship. I can’t find any info online that suggests Culliford (aka Peyo) used The Brownies as inspiration for his little men (and one woman), but it sure is fun to speculate.

Here’s a CBC Radio piece about Cox and the creation of The Brownies, and a great ephemera site.
Brad Mackayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16598315230183851740noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1293692046154595853.post-818828362883492082012-07-09T13:14:00.002-04:002012-07-11T08:25:54.955-04:00A peek at Seth's latest venture: the Crown Barber ShopHe's had his own solo-show at the Art Gallery of Ontario, built a scale-model of the fictional city of Dominion out of cardboard, and once designed a float for a parade. So what could be next for the man called Seth?

As it turns out, for the past few months he's been hard at work designing a barber shop for his wife, Tania Van Spyk. The Crown Barber Shop, which had its grand opening in Guelph, Ontario this past Saturday, is a sleek homage to the traditional two-chair barber shop -- and fits perfectly into his general mission to remake the world around him.

Located at 219 Silvercreek Parkway in a suburban strip mall the monarchist-inspired shop (a portrait of Kind Edward VI hangs inside) is trademark Seth, as can be seen by the monocle-wearing cartoon king that adorns the front window.
Inside the two-chair shop is tasteful, crisp - and surprisingly modern. Just look at those globe hanging lamps and blue-and-white linoleum tiles.
The whole operation is a tasteful homage to the work-a-day, common-man barber shops that I used to go to with my Dad when I was a kid. Sophisticated, but welcoming: the perfect place to spend 15-20 minutes browsing ancient magazines (which raises a question: how old will the periodicals in this place actually be?)
I finagled my way into a little face time with Martin, in part to gift him with a copy of The Collected Doug Wright, the massive awesome tome that I worked on. He knew Wright's work as soon as he cracked it open. Could Martin be a future jury member? A DWA host? A nominee? Who knows? Let's face it, I'm a man of many passions -- too many for one measly blog to contain -- so I started a new one dedicated to my passion for curing and smoking meat. It's been up and running for a few weeks now and is called Wood Chips and Smoke Rings. So far I've written about smoked pork tenderloin and how to make your own bacon. This here is a pic of a DIY bacon and tomato sandwich I made the other day:
Like many of my generation ("X", if memory serves) I loved Pee-Wee's Playhouse. Along with Twin Peaks, it was one of the few shows I watched religiously -- and that's what the show was like, really, a religion. You either loved it and were entirely devoted to it, or you thought it was juvenile nonsense. Back in the late 80s early 90s, that was the line for me: if you got Playhouse, then I got you. You were my kind of people as they say. (Dumb, I know -- but I was in my 20s for Jambi's sake!)

When the series was released on DVD a while back it was one on the first items I purchased with the intention of watching with my daughter, who was then about two-years-old. One kid later and the discs are still in steady rotation in the household.

For the longest time I assumed that Gary Panter was the man behind the insane design on the show -- and he was in charge. He even won an Emmy for his work on the show. But about 10 years ago I met Panter at a comics convention in Toronto and tried to get him to sign my Billy Baloney puppet (don't judge), only to have him demure. He said that Wayne White, one of his staff, was actually responsible for designing Billy along with many of the other characters on the show.

I didn't think much of it until a couple of years later I found myself mesmerized by these "word paintings" executed on thrift store paintings by none other than -- one Wayne White. Anyways, White has done a bunch of stuff since then (and is featured in a recent documentary about his career) but the Pee-Wee stuff is still likely his most widely seen and enjoyed work.

I was checking out his blog the other day and came across all these great photos from his time on the show, including original sketches. Behold!
Some are so-so, some are good and a few are great. Then there's The Art of Daniel Clowes: Modern Cartoonist. When I received this book my socks were knocked clean off. This monograph on Clowes (the man behind The Death-Ray, Wilson, Ice Haven and Ghost World) is a career-spanning beauty of a book that manages to capture the spirit and scope of the cartoonist's work over the past 30 odd years.
I liked it so much I decided to review it for The Comics Journal. It's up over there now -- and you should go read it. Then go acquire a copy. It's worth it for this alone. And for this photo:
The piece, a profile of Ottawa immigration lawyer Warren Creates, was nominated in the Best Profile of a Person category at the Kenneth R. Wilson Awards, which recognizes the best in Canadian business/trade magazines.

The piece was a joy to write in large part because of its subject. Warren Creates, as anyone who has been pulled into his orbit will tell you, is a larger-than-life whirlwind of a man who is the real-goddamn-deal. I interviewed Warren twice for this piece and the second time I asked him straight-up: What's the deal -- how do you stay so relentlessly positive? His answer gave me a chill; the kind you get when you know someone is giving you a great closing quote for your piece. But it was also a piece of advice that I have adopted in my own life in the hopes of staying as positive as possible.

Warren invited me to Ethiopia after the article came out -- which led a great friendship and another piece I wrote, but that's another story.

You can read the Creates piece over here, and let me know what you think about the ending.Brad Mackayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16598315230183851740noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1293692046154595853.post-8566010280947317612012-05-08T10:03:00.002-04:002012-05-08T10:03:59.288-04:00My review of Guy Delisle's latest graphic novelI'm just now getting over my trip to TCAF during which I conducted (trust me; that's the right word) The Doug Wright Awards. On Friday night I bumped into cartoonist Guy Delisle -- who seems super pleasant -- and it dawned on me that in my haste to organize the awards I forgot to update the blog with a link to my recent review of his latest graphic novel, Jerusalem: Chronicles From the Holy City.

So, you know - I reviewed Jerusalem: Chronicles From the Holy City for The Globe and Mail a couple of weekends back. You should go read it and tell me what you think. This is undoubtedly the best of his series of comics dispatches from some of the most interesting places on the Globe. He really spends his time with the story and has thought about what he has witnessed. I hesitate to say he's matured (since that would imply that he was immature before), but there is a palpable maturity about how he approaches this material.

On the last day of TCAF I ran into Guy again on the festival floor and got him to sign my copy of Jerusalem. It ends up that we have kids that are around the same age (8 and 5) so I asked him what he had planned next, what with his kids in school. His wife and him have decided to stop traveling for her work, so he's going to stop doing travelogues -- switching back to his other comics-type work. That has got to be a hard choice to make -- what with Jerusalem debuting on the #1 spot on The New York Times Graphic Novels best-seller list -- and I really admire his choice.
The piece -- "The accidental statesman" -- is a profile of University of Ottawa law professor Joseph Magnet (known in Ethiopia as "Professor Joe") who traveled to Ethiopia last October as part of our five-man team.

As I quickly learned, Magnet is a tremendously smart (and funny) guy who for the past couple of years has donated his time as legal counsel to the Afar people, a centuries-old tribe of nomads who live today as an ethnic minority in Ethiopia and Eritrea. A well-respected constitutional law expert in Canada, up until this point Magnet had kept his involvement with the Afar low-profile, preferring to talk about only with close friends and family. Luckily I was able to convince him to share his amazing story with the rest of the world.

Joe Magnet as photographed for University Affairs

And I think I'm not engaging in hyperbole when I call it Amazing. Magnet is comfortably ensconced as a legal authority in Canada and at 65 was not looking for a new cause. But as a man of passion, once he met and spent time with the Afar -- whose generosity of spirit was disarming even to me -- he readily offered up his expertise to them. What he's done since then has to be read to be believed.

I've had a lot of positive feedback so far about the piece, especially the opening which recounts a unique moment I was witness to in a small town in Northern Ethiopia as we were on our way out of the Afar region. In a trip full of colourful moments, this easily took the cake for me. (That, and the time that Joe, frustrated by my journalistic intransigence, ordered someone to "Shoot that man and put his body in the truck!" I admit: I was being pretty stubborn at the time.)

As a side note, I was inordinately honoured to be informed by the editor of University Affairs that my article was the first to ever include the "F-word", unedited, in the mag's pages. (Stop! I'm blushing!)

As a bonus, here's a photo I took of Magnet taken during the meeting I describe in the opening of the piece.

Another bonus, for those who enjoy the sound of my voice, University Affairs interviewed me about my trip and posted it on their site as a podcast.Brad Mackayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16598315230183851740noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1293692046154595853.post-34625931547145012242012-02-27T10:06:00.000-05:002012-02-27T10:06:21.107-05:00My review of 'The Someday Funnies'So, after more than three decades The Someday Funnies was finally published last fall by Abrams Comic Arts. I reviewed it in this weekend's Globe and Mail.

I was anticipating this book as much as anyone, thanks the romance of its backstory and its treasure trove of lost comics riches from the likes of Harvey Kurtzman, Justin Green, Kim Deitch, C.C. Beck and Art Speigelman.

But, then it came out.

As I detail in my review, this massive book is flawed in a number of fatal (and regrettable) ways. One of the books most aggravating flaws (that got trimmed from my piece) is the intrusive and unfunny cartoons of editor Michel Choquette that are conspicuous throughout the book. Imagine trying to read, say, Maus or Clyde Fans and having a tiny avatar of Art Speigelman or Seth pop up IN THE MIDDLE OF A PANEL, and you'll understand how annoying this trope is.

It speaks to a failure to understand the medium of comics itself. Why else would you foist a trope like this on art that people have been waiting decades to see in print? Who knows?

Hopefully maybe someday -- 40 years hence -- an ambitious editor will publish thsi product in an "artist's edition" (like these from IDW), devoid of shoddy colouring job, confusing layouts and "pop-up" cartoon editors.

Award-winning Canadian filmmaker Denis Villeneuve (Polytechnique) is adapating Joe Sacco's most recent graphic novel into an animated feature. Apparently Villeneuve will be co-writing the script (perhaps with Sacco) and will bae the look of the film on Sacco's drawings. Super-interesting.
